Jumping on the Wii Fit bandwagon

Wednesday December 3, 2008

Our Wii Fit arrived this week (you'd have to know my husband to understand why this isn't as weird as it sounds, getting a big family gift just days before Christmas...) and we are all having a blast! The balance board is really quite a clever device, and amazingly sensitive to the tiniest movements. We have all spent quite a bit of time on it checking out the different games, cheering each other on, and challenging each other to tightrope walks and hula-hoop contests. Our 3-year-old is the only one who can't really master the games, but then again they are certainly not intended for preschoolers. Our 6-year-old, on the other hand, earned four stars and the title of "Yoga Master" for her excellently balanced Sun Salutation.

Since we have been playing together as a family, our biggest challenge is in switching from user to user. There are several screens to click through to move from one Mii (avatar) to another, which can be frustrating. I also wish that we could turn off the rankings/competition for every event. It's inevitable that our young Yoga Master will drop down a few pegs at some point and when that happens, she's not going to be happy. (If you know how to make adjustments that would help us with these issues, let me know in the comments!)

I don't think that any of us is going to top Donna Schwartz Mills, the mom who lost 56 pounds using Wii Fit and Wii Boxing. (Mills also worked out at a gym with a trainer, but credits the Wii for helping motivate her to get in shape). But we sure are having fun!

I wish there was a way to flow through the yoga poses without stopping. Maybe they’ll fix that?

Yes — that would be great! With all of them, I never know quite what to do with the wiimote while I am doing the pose/game. Don’t really need to hold it, but need it close by to use as soon as I’m done.

At Wal-Mart, you can purchase a special pouch, which gets strapped around your waist, to hold the Wii remote.

User Rankings in Wii Sports can be for the individual or the group.

You are right it is not a lof of fun for a kid or a late arrival to work against a score list of from 1 to 10 the same person.

The only solution i found was deleting the best players….

I agree that it would be nice to flow through the exercises without having to stop to listen to the trainer say the same things over and over again. It’s a waste of good time. But I do like being able to see the trainer doing the poses.
