Our Wii is getting a workout

We have lots of visitors here for Christmas and the Wii has seen quite a lot of use! It's been fun for everyone from little kids up to grandparents. My mother has fallen in love with Wii bowling, my brother is determined to master the balance bubble (a Wii Fit game), and my sister surprised herself and all of us by hitting some home runs in baseball. I really have less than zero interest in video games normally, but the Wii is different. Tt's even fun to watch other people play, so it's great for groups, even intergenerational ones. My husband's decision to set up the Wii as a pre-season present was right on. We had fewer gifts to open on Christmas morning, but it was easy to point to the Wii and say "it's worth it."

The other gift the kids and I received, courtesy of some generous relatives, is snowshoes. (Actually, I hear my aunt got a good deal on mine at TJ Maxx, of all places.) We are thrilled--and certainly have plenty of snowy terrain right outside our door to explore.

I hope your Christmas was merry and your Hanukkah was happy. If you or your kids received a great active-play toy, or came up with a fun way to fit in holiday fitness, I'd love to hear about it in a comment below or in my forum. Thanks!

I have always wanted to try snowshoeing!

Can you recommend some games that your youngest likes and can actually do? Sports or non-sports. I’m trying to find something for my 4yo to play. She likes the downhill skiing on Wii Fit. But some other games are too slow or require too much hand coordination/manipulation.

Hi L.,
My 3 yr old can’t really do most of the games either. He likes (and can do) boxing on Wii Sports and running on Wii Fit but that is about it. I have seen a Dora game advertised but don’t know much about it. There is also a game from Bandai called Active Life Outdoor Challenge, which uses a durable mat controller. I haven’t tried it yet but it might work better for younger kids than the Fit (and you don’t have to hover around saying “don’t jump on it!!!” like I do).
