Fun and safety in the snow

Two upcoming events highlight snow sports. Tomorrow, January 12, is Winter Trails Day. Dozens of resorts and parks will host events to introduce newcomers to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing. The great thing about these sports is that they are easy to learn, so kids (and adults!) can feel successful right away.

If you prefer snowboarding or downhill skiing, check ski areas near you for special events, signage, and promotions devoted to ski safety awareness starting on January 19. My favorite event is at Okemo Mountain Resort in Vermont. Anyone wearing a helmet can take it off to show the resort's photo team their messy, matted "helmet head" hair for a chance to win lift tickets!
