Aerobic Exercise

By Catherine Holecko, About.com

Definition:

"Aerobic" (and "anaerobic"), in exercise, most correctly refers to the intensity of physical activity, not the type. Aerobic means "with air" (or oxygen), and in this context refers to an intensity of exercise in which the body supplies the muscles with oxygen so they can work. As the demand for oxygen rises, so does the heart rate and the rate of respiration.

If you participate in aerobic physical activity regularly, you can improve your cardiorespiratory endurance and also lose weight as your body burns calories.

Aerobic activity can include weight-bearing exercise such as running or dance, or non-weight-bearing exercise, such as swimming or biking.
