Definition:
Body-mass index (BMI) is a person's weight in pounds divided by his height in inches squared, multiplied by 703. As an indicator of weight relative to height, BMI measurements may help diagnose obesity or if a person is overweight.
To determine your BMI, you can use the formula, or an online calculator or chart (this calculator and chart applicable to adults only). For an adult, a healthy BMI is between 18.5 and 25, depending on height.
BMI charts for children are different. Consult a pediatric calculator for accurate information.
