By , About.com Guide

Definition:

Tendonitis is the inflammation and/or irritation of a tendon, the strong tissue that connects muscles to bones. Tendonitis usually occurs as a result of injury or overuse. Tendinitis occurs most often in the tendons of the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and heel (the Achilles tendon). Treatment includes anti-inflammatory medication, rest, and physical therapy. Tendonitis may be prevented with adequate warm-up of the muscles and cautious avoidance of repetitive motion.
