The Great Backyard Bird Count

Enjoy the outdoors and help scientists during the Great Backyard Bird Count.

By , About.com Guide

Event: The Great Backyard Bird Count

Date: Each February (Presidents' Day weekend, Friday through Monday).

Location: Anywhere (although nature centers, parks, and birdwatching groups may sponsor special events and outings)

Organizer: The Cornell Lab of Ornithology and the National Audubon Society (U.S.); Bird Studies Canada

What to do: Count birds! Spend at least 15 minutes watching birds on one or several of the four days of the Great Backyard Bird Count. Keep a list of what kinds of birds you see and how many. Report your findings at the Great Backyard Bird Count site. No experience necessary; you'll find field guides and other how-tos at the GBBC site too.

Ornithologists add all the GBBC reports to a huge database on birds. They use the info to study how bird populations are changing, where birds migrate, and much more.
