If you are taking your children out for an afternoon of sledding, snowshoeing, snow play or just a winter walk, you know you need mittens, boots, and other gear to keep them safe and healthy. But the following often come in handy too, and are easy to forget until it's too late. Bring a lightweight backpack or fanny pack and fill with:

  • Extra mittens or gloves for everyone
  • Facial tissues or a handkerchief
  • Thermos of hot cocoa
  • Field guide to your area (to identify birds or animal tracks)
  • Sunscreen and sunglasses
  • Camera
