Yoga
My typical weekly routine is
Power vinyasa yoga class twice a week; Biggest Loser Weight Loss yoga DVD about once a week; biking, walking, running, etc. on other days.
How I got started
I really didn't start enjoying exercise until I found yoga. I used to pass a Bikram yoga studio on my way to and from work every day. Finally one day I took a class and I was immediately hooked. That was more than 10 years ago.
Why I love it
I love that yoga is a total body workout--strength, balance, flexibility--that also quiets the mind and relieves stress. The class I take now is different every time, and I also love seeing the progress I can make. Sometimes it is a very tiny change in my posture, other times I am able to do a pose that I've never done before. My kids see me doing my yoga routine at home and they like to join in.
Advice
- There are many different forms of yoga. Try a few different ones to see what you like.
- Look for a teacher that you connect with. Some are very chatty, others are all business; some provide hands-on corrections, which you may or may not like.
- Remember that you don't have to be naturally able to twist up like a pretzel! You start where you are and go from there.
