Got those fitness resolutions lined up?

Sunday December 28, 2008
Yes, it's that time of year where we all vow to eat healthier and get more exercise in the coming year, and maybe even shed a pound or two. If you or your kids need suggestions, try my list of health-and-fitness-themed pledges. As for me, I have two resolutions of my own.

First, I'll make sure that the Wii doesn't provide my children's only physical activity during these long winter days! We will snowshoe, dance, ice skate, swim (indoors!) and just have fun playing together.

Second, I'll keep up with my vinyasa yoga class, even as my pregnancy progresses (I am 14 weeks along). My instructor has already agreed to work with me to modify poses that are difficult or risky during pregnancy.

If one of your resolutions is to join a gym, now is a great time to do it. Many fitness centers run money-saving specials at this time of year. My local YMCA, for example, will waive its sign-up fee (normally $75) for everyone who joins on January 1.

What are your resolutions this year? For more inspiration, check out the posts in this month's All About Parenting Blog Carnival. Happy 2009!

We’re signing up for swimming lessons. But, I do love the Wii fit. We have bowling tournaments and it’s a lot less expensive than taking all 8 kids bowling.

I was so proud of my 15-year old for her two resolutions for 2009. Number 1 is to exercise and number 2 is to listen to what other people say and try to think about them. How many teenagers even realize that’s something they should do??

Hurray for you for keeping up with your yoga. I’ve taken classes several times and have found that it is the best for maintaining my flexibility, which is so important for older folks.

Catherine, I like the fact that you have separate lists of fitness goals for kids, teens, adults, and families. I plan to adopt this one: “I will think in small steps. If I start an exercise program, I will focus first on adopting the habit—regular walks or a low-impact class. When I attain my first goal, I will set the next one and raise the bar if I am ready.” Thanks!

My son is too young for resolutions but I loved the suggestion for what kids can do. When he’s ready, I think it will help learn about setting healthy goals and developing a plan to stick to them.
