Time for recess

My kids were happy to get back to school yesterday. They really missed seeing their friends--and I think the giant snow piles on the playground (thanks to the snow-day storm and another post-Christmas snowfall) were awfully enticing too! As long as they have snowpants and boots, and refrain from throwing snowballs, the kids are free to make forts, slides, snowmen or whatever else they dream up. So much recess fun!

Earlier this week, the American Academy of Pediatrics released a policy statement devoted to school recess. The AAP's Council on School Health says recess benefits kids cognitively, socially, and physically: "The American Academy of Pediatrics believes that recess is a crucial and necessary component of a child's development and, as such, it should not be withheld for punitive or academic reasons." I hope this statement helps parents, doctors, teachers, and school administrators protect recess for every school-aged child.
