How to Play Sock Tag

By , About.com Guide

Sock tag is just one of the dozens of versions of tag or chase! It's lots of fun for a group, requires little equipment, and will really get kids running and moving. Plus, see below for a variation on Sock Tag called Dragon's Tail Tag.
Difficulty: Easy
Time Required: 10-20 minutes

Here's How:

  1. Give each player a scarf, bandanna, or long sock to act as a "tail." Have kids tuck the "tails" into the back of their waistbands.
  2. Start by having players scatter across a playing area. When you shout "Go!" players chase each other, trying to grab opponents' tails (while protecting their own tails too).
  3. Once a student loses his tail, he must perform a fitness activity (five squats or one quick lap around the playing area), and then he can rejoin the game and try to grab himself a new tail from another player.
  4. Play until one player has all the tails, or for a predetermined time period.

Tips:

  1. No sitting on or hiding of tails!
  2. Dragon's Tail variation: Split players into groups of four or more and have them form chains by linking arms or grabbing each others' waists or shoulders. Give only the last player in the chain a tail. The players at the head of each dragon (line) now try to grab the other teams' tails. Each team's chain must stay unbroken.
  3. For yet another variation, make just one dragon. The player at the head of the line tries to steal the tail, while the players in the middle try to stop her (without breaking the chain).

What You Need

  • Large, flat playing area
  • Several scarves or socks
